해외 취업을 위한 영문 커버 레터 쓰는 법

해외 취업, 특히 미국 취업을 위해서는 영문 커버 레터가 필요합니다. 어떤 인사 담당자는 커버 레터 없이 이력서만 제출한 지원자는 처음부터 채용 대상에서 제외하는 경우도 있습니다. 반면 이력서만으로도 충분히 평가를 할 수 있다고 판단하여 커버 레터를 제출하지 않도록 하는 기업도 있습니다. 기업마다 채용 절차나 필수 서류가 다를 수 있지만, 커버 레터를 제출하지 말라는 공지가 없는 경우에는 커버 레터를 작성하여 제출하는 것을 권장합니다.

머리말

커버 레터의 머리말 서식과 디자인은 일관성을 위해 이력서의 머리말 형식과 일치해야 합니다. 커버 레터 본문은 이력서 본문과 같은 글씨체를 사용해야 하며, 문서의 모든 면에 1인치 여백이 있어야 합니다. 머리말에 이름과 연락처 정보(전화 번호, 주소 및 이메일 주소 포함)를 입력합니다. 웹 사이트 또는 LinkedIn 프로필에 대한 링크를 포함할 수도 있습니다.

본문

커버 레터 본문 첫 문장에서는 지원하고자 하는 포지션을 한 번 더 분명하게 명시합니다. 첫 문단은 왜 이 포지션에 관심을 가지게 되었고, 지원하게 되었는 지에 대해 설명합니다. 일반적인 이유로 많이 쓰는 내용은 아래와 같습니다.

여기서 중요한 것은 지원하고자 하는 포지션에 대해 충분히 조사를 해야 한다는 것입니다. 해당 포지션에서 하는 주요 역할이 무엇인지, 그리고 여러 역할 중에 어떤 부분이 특히 본인의 진로 또는 관심 분야와 연관이 있는지 등에 대해 정확하게 이해해야 좋은 커버 레터를 쓸 수 있습니다. 최악의 케이스는 채용 담당자가 지원자의 커버 레터가 복사&붙이기를 통해 만들어졌다고 생각하는 것입니다. 채용 담당자는 커버 레터에 충분히 공을 들인 지원자를 선호합니다.

첫 문단을 쓸 때 유의해야 하는 또다른 점은 내용이 짧아야 한다는 것입니다. 정말 중요한 내용은 두 번째와 세 번째 문단에서 이야기할 것이기 때문입니다.

두 번째와 세 번째 단락에서는 채용 담당자가 왜 이 지원자가 해당 포지션에 가장 적합한 경력과 업적을 가진 후보인지 알 수 있게 설명합니다. 지원자가 기업을 위해 어떤 역할을 할 수 있고, 기업이 직면한 중요한 문제를 해결하는데 어떻게 도움을 줄 수 있으며, 그런 도움을 줄 수 있는 사람이라는 것을 경력과 업적을 통해 설명합니다. 여러 업적을 나열하는 것보다는 하나 또는 두 개의 가장 주목할 만한 업적을 통해 설명하는 것이 더 효과적입니다.

본문은 한 페이지 보다 더 적은 분량으로 작성해야 합니다. 커버 레터는 머리말, 날짜와 인사말, 본문, 마무리를 모두 포함하여 한 페이지를 넘지 않는 것이 중요하기 때문입니다. 만약 경력과 업적에 대해 쓸 말이 너무 많아서 한 페이지에 못 담을 정도라면, 지원하는 포지션과 가장 관련이 있는 경력 또는 업적을 한 두 개만 선택하여 이에 대해서만 쓰는 것이 좋습니다. 본인의 경력과 업적에 대한 열정과 자신감을 표현하는 것은 좋지만, 거만하게 보이지 않도록 주의합니다.

마무리

커버 레터의 마무리에는 정리 문장, 마무리 문구와 함께 이름을 씁니다. 아래는 정리 문장 예시입니다.
